There are several different types of health insurance offered in the state of Illinois. One of these options is the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, or COBRA. This act was formed and passed in 1985 by congress to protect employees who had lost their jobs by providing them with optional and temporary health insurance coverage. Your previous health plan from work will send you notification if you qualify for COBRA; then you can choose to accept or reject it within 60 days.

The COBRA coverage also protects your spouse and any children who are still dependent on you for health coverage. This is offered to former employees at group rates which are a little higher than they were while the person was still working for the previous employer because their employer is no longer paying a portion of the premium bills. This is a good option to have if you are between jobs and looking for another health insurance, as this will cover you and your family for a limited amount of time.

There are quite a few medical benefits which COBRA provides their participants. These include:

Since the doctors are under contract with the HMO, you can only have your choice of the doctors on their list, unless you have a specific referral for a specialist who is not on the list.

Most of the HMOs are qualified by the Federal Government; this means that they provide, without any limits, basic health insurance coverage including:

You can also get health care in your home, any detoxification and referrals to assist with quitting smoking or drug abuse, and a total of twenty visits for mental health care that is take as an outpatient service.

Preferred Provider Organization Health Insurance

This type of health insurance coverage uses groups of physicians and hospitals who form contracts with the health insurance companies for providing medical services for the insured for an agreed upon price. To help control the cost of backing the insured customers, the PPO offers a type of coverage called the Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO). The EPO, which is almost the same as the PPO, will let their insured customers use only the doctors and hospitals that are on their list.

To keep the cost  if health insurance to a minimum for the beneficiaries; they are given the option of staying within the network of health care providers as opposed to choosing health care providers out side of their specified network of providers. If you choose a health care provider out side of their network, you will face higher premiums, deductibles (which range in price from $100 to $150+), co-insurance, and co-payments to your insurance company.

The PPO will cover visits to the doctor’s office, any lab testing or x-rays that you need, an ambulance service when needed, any kind of durable medical equipment such as a hospital-home bed or wheelchair. They will pay if you need to stay at the hospital and for any benefits in the way of preventative care. This form of health insurance is generally more expensive than the HMO form of insurance.

Indemnity Health Insurance

The Indemnity Health Insurance policies are the usual types of insurance that most people use as a comprehensive plan; it will cover most of the major medical services and benefits. It is available in either group or individual, but most of the insurance companies in the state of Illinois will offer both kinds of coverage. With this type of coverage you may see any doctor of you want, without any limitation; but you must pay your deductable on the medical bills before the insurance company will reimburse you for any of the expenses that they deem eligible to pay. You are required to pay a coinsurance and submit your own claims.

This type of insurance coverage uses a UCR plan; which is a Usual, Customary and Reasonable coverage. The insurance companies keep up with the statistics of what health care providers are charging in general and use that as their standard for determining how much they will pay for the different kinds of services.

If your medical bills go over the amount that the insurance company set, you are responsible for the balance. The UCR also has a policy called the Maximum Out Of Pocket, this policy sets an amount of money on any medical bills for a year. If the insured’s medical expenses exceed this amount the UCR will pay the remainder of the bills.
